While some dentistry patients look at dental insurance as a barrier to keeping their smile healthy because of how complicated it can be to navigate, our dental patients view it as a benefit! Our dentistry team does everything possible to maximize your benefits and ensure you get the most out of your investment in coverage by filing claims on your behalf. We’re also adept at navigating Medicaid and MassHealth plans! Below, we’ve included some helpful information that will allow you to better understand your plan. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to call our dental office directly.

Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

Dental insurance forms

In order to better understand your plan, there are a few important terms you should commit to memory:

  • The premium is the monthly or annual amount you pay for coverage.
  • The deductible is the amount that your insurance company requires you to pay out of pocket before your benefits will begin covering treatment.
  • The maximum is the capped-off amount that your insurance will pay out for services over the course of a year.
  • Waiting Period. The waiting period is a period of time that you may be required to wait before certain services are covered by your plan.

What Does My Dental Insurance Cover?

Every dental insurance plan is different, so in order to find out whether a certain treatment is covered by your benefits, it’s best to contact your insurance company directly and ask. That being said, many plans determine coverage based on a 100-80-50 policy, which means they cover 100 percent of two checkups and cleanings a year, 80 percent of basic services like cavity fillings, and 50 percent of more extensive treatments.
